I thought it time we put a little of our expertise out for everyone to use. Both workers and employers need to communicate and sometimes all’s it takes is having a suggestion on how to change things. For the cleaners it helps keep the job/contract and for employers it save having to look for new cleaners and hope they get it right.
I have been in the cleaning business for over a decade and it’s gotten to the point where I cannot walk into a commercial building anywhere in this town without looking at the floors, the desks, the windows and assessing how well the cleaning staff is doing. Some places sparkle and shine, while others are dark, dingy and lackluster. The cleanliness of the business is often one of the items people, both clients and staff, consciously or unconsciously, use to judge a business, so it is very important to get it right. It might sound silly or cliché, but a messy, dirty workplace will turn customers off and have a lasting negative effect on staff productivity and morale.
Just because a place looks dingy or messy doesn’t mean the cleaning staff isn’t trying their best. They are very often hard working individuals trying to do a good job. The problem is that often people can’t see the forest for the trees. Over the next few weeks I will offer a few tips for staff and management to help overcome the small problems when cleaning.
1. Dirty floor
Have you ever come into the office on a Monday and the floors have been cleaned but you can still see water marks and swirls from the cleaning mop? The floor is clean but looks and feels untidy? The floor looks like it has been washed with dirty water? Well it has!
If there is a lot of floor or the janitor’s closet is a good distance away, workers tend not to change the wash water as often. If you don’t change the water often you end up washing with dirty water. The floor looks deceptively clean when wet but once the water dries it leaves dirt back on the floor. Cleaners also tend not to change the mop heads as often as they should. After a certain amount of use the mop head really won’t come clean again and needs to be replaced. Nothing more frustrating than running a pail of clean water, getting to the area you need to clean and putting the mop in the clean water only to watch the water turn instantly brown.
2. The Fix
This is one of the quickest fixes we know, even though it may slow down the cleaning time a bit, in the long run it will pay for itself over and over. Change the wash water more often. Simple ain’t it? Well if you have to go to the other side of the building to empty the pail and refill it, cleaners will get as much out of the water before changing it. Here managers have to step in and get the workers to change the water more often. Of course that means the job will take a little longer to finish and managers will have to take that into account. If you do have a problem with changing the water, drying the floor right after may help, but doing that can also be problematic and we really don’t think it’s a good long term solution. The other thing is to change the mop heads much more often than you have been. A clean mop head is the best defense against dirty dingy floors.
